About this deal

Red and yellow are the official colors of Gryffindor’s house. Together, they resonate with the element of fire. Red stands for passion and energy, while yellow signifies happiness and freshness. Gryffindor has a gothic serif font marking its wordmark. It’s bold and readable.

There was also a notice board, for public announcements such as the date of the next Hogsmeade weekend trip, but also for notices from individual students seeking to buy or sell secondhand books, or trade Chocolate Frog Cards, or similar, as in any school. Interestingly, the school adopted their last names for the faculties and used animals to identify them. Thus, a lion, snake, eagle, and badger greet visitors whenever they visit each house. The steam engine used in the film adaptations is the GWR 4900 Class 5972 Olton Hall, but it was not the first locomotive to be disguised as the Hogwarts Express. To promote the books, the Southern Railway locomotive 34027 Taw Valley was repainted and renamed temporarily, but was rejected by director Chris Columbus as looking 'too modern' for the film. Filming locations for the Hogwarts Express sequences include Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Kings Cross railway station and the route of the Jacobite Express which follows the West Highland Line from Fort William to Mallaig in Scotland, as it crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct. [26] J. K. Rowling was once asked in an interview into which House would she sort British politician and former Prime minister Gordon Brown, were she the Sorting Hat. She jokingly responded that she would sort him into Gryffindor, because of the red colours of his political party (the Labour Party), which match the colours of Gryffindor. [50] This pin reminds us of the house decorations that adorn the Great Hall at the end of the school year. At the feast, the house that has won the House Cup will be heroed in coloured banners like these. The scarlet and gold in this pin lets us know that in your heart, Gryffindor always wins every time! The colours and emblems of Gryffindor resemble the historical English coat of arms. Whether this was intentional on Rowling's part is unknown. Four powerful witches and wizards founded the school around 990 AD. They were Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff. Their sole aim was to transfer the knowledge of magic to new students. With this goal, their gift would stay forever.

As for the color palette of the Gryffindor crest, it is composed of two main shades — gold and burgundy, where gold may vary from its classic bright shades to darker and more intense ones. The color palette was already explained above: Gryffindor is a faculty with Fire as its element, thus the color combination used for its logo is associated with flame in the first place. Red also stands for courage and passion, while yellow symbolized energy and happiness, and all these qualities you can see in the students of the faculty.

After several years, Salazar Slytherin left Hogwarts. He reasoned that only witches and wizards with pure blood should have their education at Hogwarts. The other founders, however, didn’t share his opinion. But before leaving the school, Slytherin built the Chamber of Secrets.

Meaning and history

The entrance to the Chamber is hidden in the second-floor girls' lavatory (haunted by Moaning Myrtle). One of the sink taps has a snake scratched into its side; when a command in Parseltongue is spoken, it opens to reveal the mouth of a dark, slimy chute, wide enough to slide down, that gives onto a stone tunnel. There are many skeletons of small animals littering the floor and even a gigantic skin shed by the Basilisk. The tunnel leads to a solid wall, carved with two entwined serpents with emeralds for eyes. [22] At a command in Parseltongue, the wall opens to expose a long, dim corridor, lined with monumental statues of snakes, including two rows of towering stone pillars with more carved serpents that brace the ceiling. A colossal statue of Salazar Slytherin, looking ancient and monkey-like, is at the centre. The Basilisk rested inside the statue and emerged from its mouth when the Heir of Slytherin, Tom Riddle, summoned it. [23] Maude, Belinda (31 March 2017).
