Let’s talk briefly about the plot, or how things go down, and of course what works and also what may not. And truth be told, I thought I was going to have my cake and eat it too with Interstellar because it’s the best of both worlds in my opinion, science fiction and Christopher Nolan, but there are some issues and shortcomings to grapple with here too. Interstellar comes to our favorite 4K Ultra HD format in a three-disc Combo Pack (1 UHD, 2 Blu-ray Discs) with Digital HD and a whopping three hours of in-depth, behind-the-scenes bonus content detailing the epic shoot, the scientific realities explored in the film, a look at creating the stunning visuals, plus an extended cut of “The Science of Interstellar” broadcast special and much more. In chapter 9, the wide-angle shots of the Endurance making its approach to the wormhole and then venturing through it, look terrific, as the deep, interstitial blacks, sepia tones, and flashes of brilliant light show off the spot-on application of HDR. Plotting an Interstellar Journey – The filmmakers and some members of the cast look at the project ahead of them.

It may not be wholly gratifying to everyone, but it’s a marvelous film experience that is capable of warming the heart and exciting the senses. Occasionally I found myself struggling to hear dialog especially when blended with an active sequence shared by effects and music.It may be a billion years away from now, but make no doubt about it, the sun will eventually wreak havoc on our favorite planet and life as we know it, well…may come to a crispy end. However, without going into spoilers again, a lot of time was spent in outer space as it relates to the number of Earth years that pass by. As stated, Interstellar already looked fabulous on Blu-ray, but that image was not without its faults, despite the mostly jaw-dropping results. When I reviewed Interstellar during its initial theatrical release I said, "While stupendously broad in scope and epic space adventure, Nolan's "Interstellar" is also frustratingly jam-packed with so much explanation that there's little left up to the imagination.

Whether it be the countdown to take-off as Coop is driving away from the farm, or - much more importantly - Michael Caine's pivotal revelations, both of which are completely smothered by the overwhelming score. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m fascinated beyond my wildest imagination about some of the topics and theories covered in this presentation, but I do strongly feel the lay people seeing this for the spectacle alone may get bogged down in it and adversely not care for it as much as they probably would have if they completely understood it all. The movie was originally shot on a combination of traditional 35mm and IMAX 65mm film, and those elements were later mastered in a 4K digital intermediate, which we can assume was used for this transfer.

You see, when it comes to the 40 something-year old director Christopher Nolan, in my opinion he’s earned the right to make a mistake or two and I’ll stand by the man, support him and walk in blindly to whatever his name is attached to no matter what, just like I did for Man of Steel last year. Back in 2015 I said “I could stop right here and say this is one of the best Blu-ray discs I have ever spun in my Blu-ray player since their “inception” in 2006, but I wouldn’t be doing my job if I simply just said that. The UHD Blu-ray was reviewed on a Samsung UE55KS8000 Ultra HD TV and a Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Meant to be thought inspiring but not preachy, Christopher Nolan’s typical approach to filmmaking, enhanced by visual expression, is fully realized as the world of Interstellar has a tangible aesthetic that is captivating thanks to outstanding production elements and spot on direction. None of this amounts to anything more than a stylistic choice, however, and the audio track cannot be faulted for its faithful adherence to Nolan's desires, delivering the sound exactly as he intended.
