The largest part of the fandom is made up by clubs that allow their members to 'play' Pern by creating original characters within the setting of Anne McCaffrey's world. And for those just discovering this magical place, there are incomparable tales of danger, deceit, and daring, just waiting to be explored. For example, no new fan-created MU* games were allowed while the game rights were licensed to Ubisoft for the development of the Dragon Riders: Chronicles of Pern computer game (released in 2001). Anne was originally scheduled to attend the 2011 Dragon*Con, but had deferred her appearance until the 2012 event due to heart problems, just a few months before her death in late November of that year.The focus is back on dragons in this book as we meet the odd white dragon Ruth and his rider, the young Lord Holder Jaxom. Here, you'll discover not just the publication year, which is essential for understanding the context and evolution of the series, but also a succinct summary that teases the story without spoiling any surprises. D'kor and Zenth alert the others, and make their way to the Hatching Grounds, where B'rak stops Roth from poisoning the queen egg, before D'kor defeats him in battle. If you don’t care to go back in time, and want to continue to see what happens next in the Pern saga as quickly as possible, move on to All the Weyrs of Pern.

Towards the end of the book, McCaffrey pulls some authorial gymnastics to shoehorn Robinton into situations from the original books that truly strained my belief.There are a few books that give alternate perspectives on events, like Nerilka’s Story and The Renegades of Pern. D'kor next heads to the Rising Star Inn, where he finds that Belan has been taken away by another dragonrider. Humans have colonized the planet Pern in the Rukbat star system, but have lost much of their technology and history (including their origin on Earth) due to periodic onslaughts of Thread, a mycorrhizoid spore that voraciously consumes all organic material, including humans and their crops, given the opportunity.

Piemur gets training in drumming, a system of long-range communication used on Pern, and becomes trusted with important tasks by Masterharper Robinton. In 1984, Gallimard published Dragonriders of Pern: The Book Game, a game in which 2 players use illustrated books to resolve aerial engagement against the "threads".The biggest problem has been solved (or at least, it will be solved in the near future), and it’s very epic. Also, there is no formal religion and nothing like the Medieval Church, the closest equivalent being in fact the Dragonriders, who have a planet-wide organization and to whom a tithe is due – though they are in no way sworn to celibacy (rather the reverse). The white dragon, though a runt, has some special abilities that will prove to be very important later. It's the perfect spot for readers to get a glimpse of what lies within the pages, helping them decide which book to dive into next. A few weeks later, D'kor wakes at Fort Weyr and discovers that the sickness has been cured, but Roth was not captured.

In the future, I will probably stick to reading Dragonsdawn first, then the original trilogy ( Dragonflight, Dragonquest, The White Dragon) and wrap up with All the Weyrs of Pern.Nerilka is a good protagonist, and the disease fallout is a very interesting event, but this one is largely skippable.
