About this deal

It does perhaps point to the conclusion, though, that although the author undoubtedly worked really hard to acquire his great expertise, success is also dependent on who you know and how you treat them. Michael Caine delivers another book this time with the intention of delivering some tips to wannabee actors/actresses and to people that are good doing something. Hollywood legend, British national treasure and raconteur Michael Caine shares the wisdom, anecdotes, an insights that life has taught him.

This is not a biography as we are used to, this is more some pieces of history followed by advices, by lessons learnt. But don't get me wrong, he likes fame, but because it got him and those he loves up outta that gutter. He determines to live in the current moment and even tells his grandchildren, "Don't look back, you'll trip over! For lord's sake, as a boy he was fostered during the war and kept in the cupboard under the stairwell, literally locked inside like a real world Harry Potter, while the family went off for weekends. In episode one he gets some advice from John Wayne and also looks back on his time as an evacuee and later as a soldier on National Service.

Caine not only waxes lyrical about his friends and family but entire sections of the book read like extended acknowledgements to those who've helped him on his way, from the bloke at the butter factory where Caine was working who first told him about the Stage newspaper, to Hollywood royalty John Wayne. He is a brilliant actor and I always admired him in his roles through his whole career from "Zulu" to "Interstellar". Michael comes across as a hard-working, decent chap who feels grateful to have had such good fortune in his career and with his family. In my head I had already imagined and then quickly written off Batman, but I thought perhaps I could be a great villain. Even so, there are some really entertaining stories throughout, which are told with his ever-present wit and humility.I must confess that my primary reason for reading this is that I love listening to Michael Caine and wanted to hear him talk for 7 hours. Some real gems that made me laugh out loud and some sound advice that's also applicable to us lesser mortals not in the film industry. There were some items and situations frequently re-explained, oftentimes very closely to the last time these things were mentioned.
