About this deal
It is around 21 metres tall with a circumference of around 20 metres, has over 300 main branches, and is estimated to weigh around 140 tonnes. While many pitaya species were formerly classified as members of the Hylocereus genus, all of the members of that genus have been reclassified as members of the Selenicereus genus.
Dragon trees are slow growing, reaching their mature height after 8-10 years, so they will need repotting only every three to four years. If you're not a brunch thief, I recommend that you skip ahead and start with a cutting or a small plant. The first type of pruning you’ll do is when you are encouraging vertical growth on your potted dragon fruit cuttings or hand raised seedlings. Fertilize the plant every 2-3 months with a balanced fertilizer to provide essential nutrients for growth.
This genus is classified within the Hylocereeae tribe, whose other members include both Christmas cacti, and epiphyllums.
Located in Breña Alta, a municipality on the eastern side of the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, the Dragos Gemelos are two entwined Dracaena draco trees. Its skin ripens from green to colorful shades of yellow, pink, or red, depending on the species or cultivar. In this case, one cutting per five-gallon planter is a good option – you can always repot later if needed.
The dragon tree is free of pests, except for aphids, which usually attack seedlings but not mature plantings.
