About this deal

White ports are produced the same way as red ports, except that they use white grapes – Donzelinho Branco, Esgana-Cão, Folgasão, Gouveio, Malvasia Fina, Rabigato and Viosinho. The Douro valley where port wine is produced was defined and established as a protected region, and the name Douro thus an official appellation, in 1756, making it the third oldest, after Chianti (1716) and Tokaj (1730). Fermentation takes place in vats (lagares) at a controlled temperature until it reaches the right degree of sweetness (baum). Very handsome packaging in a squat flask and wooden stopper - comes in asmart cylinder with wooden lid.

At 20 years aging in oak, the Port will have colours ranging from a reddish to golden Tawny, these exceptional wines are full of fruit and their flavours are more developed and concentrated due to the fact that the wine was aged in small oak casks. This has spent 20 years in cask which has given it a warm rustic amber colour and powerful dried apple and apricot flavours which merge with soft spices and full and nutty on to a long and refined finish. I actually purchased another bottle as a Xmas present for a relative and couldn't resist one for myself. They own several well-known brands of Port, and since 1999 have been producing table wines from the Douro. A fresh-as-a-daisy 20-year-old that needs neither decanting, nor, in Sebastian Payne MW’s view, eking out once opened!

On the palate, it is rich, softly sweet and smooth, perfectly balanced, with a long and elegant finish. The Douro is one of the wildest, most mountainous and rugged wine regions of Portugal, cut through in deep twists. Its mountainous terrain and steep, winding valleys create a kaleidoscope of microclimates, each producing unique wines. Beira Interior is a rather disparate region covering a vast swathe of inland Portugal south of the Douro and east of Dão.It may not be reproduced in any way whatsoever without the prior consent of Waitrose Limited nor without due acknowledgement.
