Still, much of what we’re given seems like random window-dressing rather than carefully planned and executed décor: a Chinese platter here and a London park there. Perhaps the most authentic depiction in The Moon is that of Kowloon, where we feel the crowded conditions of the Walled City and the squalid life its residents are forced to endure. Largely, though, the world the author gives us is two-dimensional.The lyrics to the song were written by Sun Yi [ zh] ( 孫儀) [5] [6] and the music was composed by Weng Ching-hsi ( 翁清溪). [7] It was first sung by Chen Fen-lan ( 陳芬蘭) in 1972 or 1973 for Chen's album Dreamland ( 夢鄉) [7] [8] but was made famous by Teresa Teng's version later in 1977. [12] Legacy [ edit ] I can’t wait to start recommending this book to more Cantonese folks in my life; this book already had me reeling in my feelings as an immigrant and an inheritor of painful legacies of migration, let alone if it’s my own family’s history being explored. And it does so with so much love, painstaking detail, and profound empathy for its characters, even when they make the most unfortunate, obsessive decisions (I’m looking at you, Tommy). timing ought to give you hope. If the timing of something could be wrong, there was the possibility of it someday being right.” Buzzing: Chyi Chin proposes to Belle". news.asiaone.com, 26 January 2010. Retrieved 10 November 2014. To say that I loved this book is likely the understatement of the year. “The Moon Represents My Heart” is as if a painter decided to trade their watercolors for words, a dazzling novel that explores heartache and loss in more ways than one. I added one more star after discussing with an incredible friend who gave this book 5 stars and seemed to get what the author try to achieve — so this extra star was actually for my friend 🌝] The Wang family is hiding a secret—they all have the ability to time travel. When parents Joshua and Lily depart for the past and never return, their children Tommy and Eva are forced to deal with their grief alone. Eva tries to find her place in the present, while Tommy is pulled further and further into a past that he hopes holds the truth. When he falls in love with a woman from 1930s London Chinatown, his inability to confront his own history has serious ramifications for the people who can truly bring him happiness. The Moon Represents My Heart” brings up themes of isolation and loneliness due to an assortment of reasons, be they due to race or due to a person’s inability to confront the reason for their failures, and it’s one that is sure to resonate with readers. This is one of those quiet, contemplative gems that makes you feel something, and definitely one of the strongest debut for this year. I was hoping for a few more answers by the end, but I suppose the book isn’t about that. There were some beautiful moments, but unfortunately, overall, it just left me feeling a tad deflated.
