About this deal

Perkins, C (2013) Can guinea pigs eat horse hay? (Online) At: Can Guinea Pigs Eat Horse Hay? - Online Guinea Pig Care accessed 6/11/18. Also known as legume, Lucerne (Aus) or clover hay, this is a high fibre hay with high protein, fat and calcium. High-quality hay is the cornerstone of a rabbit’s healthy diet. It’s imperative for everything from proper digestion to proper tooth wear. Rabbits are meant to eat, as a minimum, their body size in hay on a daily basis. With that said, this feeding hay absolutely meets your rabbits’ needs. Unlike ruminants, horses digest food in small portions throughout the day, and can only use approximately 2.5% of their body weight in feed in any 24-hour period. They evolved to be continuously on the move while grazing (covering up to 50 miles (80km) per day in the wild) and their stomach digests food quite rapidly. Thus, they extract more nutrition out of smaller quantities of feed. [10] When horses are fed low-quality hay, they may develop an unhealthy, obese, "hay belly" due to over-consumption of "empty" calories. If their type of feed is changed dramatically, or if they are fed moldy hay or hay containing toxic plants, they can become ill; colic is the leading cause of death in horses. Contaminated hay can also lead to respiratory problems in horses. Hay can be soaked in water, sprinkled with water or subjected to steaming to reduce dust. Rabbits eating lots of fresh grass will drink less, whilst those eating mostly hay will drink more. Importantly, their digestive system only works properly when it is well hydrated.

Fresh Water: Fresh water should always be available. Change it daily and ensure that it hasn’t frozen in the winter months.

Grass cuttings– Guinea pigs should be given unlimited access to steadily graze on fresh grass, just as they would in the wild. But a pile of grass cuttings can be very harmful to if included in a guinea pigs’ diet. When it comes to feeding your ferrets Burgess Ferret Nuggets, we recommend gradually mixing in the new pet food with the old pet food over a period of 7-10 days until the new food completely replaces the original diet.

Oxbow, supply a variety of different types including Timothy hay, orchard grass, meadow, alfalfa and oat hay: Oxbow Animal Health Nuts and seeds– All nuts are high in fat not fibre and will give your guinea pigs extremely uncomfortable indigestion. If you’ve got some golden oldies, they may benefit from mature rabbit food with added glucosamine to support healthy joints, and added ginseng for increased vitality. If you have rabbits that are prone to weight gain, ingredients such as L-carnitine can help to promote lean body mass. When it comes to feeding your rats with Burgess Excel Rat Nuggets, you should keep rats’ mealtimes regular as they like a routine, and water should be provided in suitable bottles as rats will struggle with the traditional ball stopper bottles. Introduce Burgess Excel Rat Nuggets to your rat by gradually mixing in the new food with the old over a period of 7-10 days until the new food completely replaces the old diet.

In general, good quality nuggets or pellets, along with feeding hay, is the ideal bunny food. This is because nuggets: If you’re at all unsure about the best way of feeding your animal or have any concerns about specific nutritional requirements at different times of their life, ask your local veterinary practice for advice. Also known as pasture hay in Australia, this is high in protein and has the best balance between calcium and phosphorous out of all the hays available (Galens Garden, 2014). Guinea pig muesli – Muesli-based guinea pig diets encourage selective feeding, where they eat high starch/sugar components of the muesli while rejecting the more fibrous pellets. This means they won’t be getting all the nutrition they need.
