About this deal

Within days a new body surfaces. Like the previous victim, she's also been stitched shut and something has been left inside her. Something as ingenious as it is grotesque. And the killer isn't done yet, not by a long shot. The young man stepped inside, closed the door behind him, and approached the captain’s desk. ‘My name is Robert Hunter, sir, I’m your new detective.’ He handed over several signed forms he had brought with him. Chris never fails to come up with the absolute worst ways for his characters to die and, it sounds awful to say, but it does make for one hell of an enjoyable read. You find yourself squirming at the scenes but not being able to stop reading. I started Chris's books with One By One which was pretty horrific (and not entirely original) but it seems his earlier work is where he was his most gruesome. As for the main character Robert Hunter, I like him and he is probably now one of my favourite fictional detectives however he is portrayed as some kind of genius, a child prodigy whose university thesis is mandatory reading for FBI trainees. It usually annoys me having a perfect detective who can solve every crime however it doesn't here because I feel that Hunter is actually quite a realistic and believable character despite this 'perfectness'. A new character from the FBI is also introduced here in this book and I hope she makes more appearances as she added a lot.

The most annoying element was that everyone kept talking to themselves. Again, this felt lazy and like tell-don't-show. Characters would speak out their frustration even though it felt weird and unnatural. Yes, it succeeded in telling the reader the character's emotions or opinion but I'd much rather Hunter punched a wall so we infer his frustration, rather than him sitting at a computer alone saying, "I am very frustrated." etc.

Wrong floor, kid,’ Wilson said, pointing at the door again. ‘This is the Robbery Homicide Division – the big boys. You’re probably looking for Commercial Crimes or Support. Both of those are two floors below.’

When the forensic team reaches the spot for doing further investigation, they find that the letter ‘3’ was carved in blood on the chest of the victim. Robert Hunter initially believes that the killing was ritualistic. But when more and more dead bodies begin to surface after being murdered in a similar manner, he is forced to think otherwise. This book introduced a secondary female character, Alice Beaumont, that matches Robert's genius mind. At first, I think that she will be quite interesting as love interest for Robert. But as the story goes, I don't like that Alice seems to take the spotlight from Garcia, Robert's partner. I like Robert and Garcia's camaraderie and friendship ... and I feel like it is a bit missing. I even miss Anna, Garcia's wife. Before I wanted to study animal care I liked the idea of being a Homicide detective or CSI, now I’m glad I’m not because I have nothing but respect for the men and women that have that profession. No therapist in the world could help with the horrors they must see and they have more courage and guts than most. Hunter was also well aware of that fact. His main goal, once he’d joined the LAPD, was always to make Detective for the Robbery Homicide Division. Deep inside he had to admit that he was very proud of having scorched through the ranks at record speed. 😳 ⠀ When he and his partner are called to the scene of a brutal murder, where the victim has been hung up with a giant fish hook, Hunter begins to wonder if he has reached the edge of the depravity people could inflict on others. With a piece of poetry left at the scene, Hunter and others within the LAPD begin to ponder if this message has a deeper meaning.
