When it comes to choosing an AV receiver, there are a lot of options on the market. Two of the most popular brands are Onkyo and Denon. So, which one is the best? In terms of audio, the AVC-X3700H retains the 11 channels of processing that were upped from seven on the last iteration of this model. There are nine power amplifier channels built-in, each feeding a claimed 180W of power per channel. That means you can set the AVC-X3700H up in a 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos configuration, or add an extra two-channel amp to make full use of the processing power with a 7.2.4 set-up. So it seems this unit may have been released not fully debugged. I was certainly concerned about this issue, and hope it does not surface again. They also benefit from having the media tailored to their individual tastes, which can come in handy for people deep into harder-to-stream selections.

But the reason we love this Denon AV receiver is due to its stunning performance. Not only does it score highly across the board, it pips its predecessor sonically in pretty much every respect. No matter how demanding the mix gets, dialogue always remains clear and focused on the action. Thanks to Audyssey room correction the subwoofers are nicely integrated with the other speakers in the system, crossing over flawlessly and producing deep but controlled bass. It’s been a while since we’ve tested surround receivers in this price range, and the market has consolidated considerably recently, there are not many competitors to go round. Using just one channel, with increasing volume, speech and other sounds become a garbled mess sooner. But if you want a receiver that’s easy to set up and use, then the Denon AVR-X3700H is the way to go. It has a user-friendly interface and comes with built-in Alexa voice control, so you can operate it hands-free.

It’s an easy and effective listen. No matter how hectic the action becomes, this Denon never misses a beat. It passes the laser blasts from speaker to speaker in a wonderfully coherent manner and, no matter the scene, creates a genuine sense of place. However, despite this heavy focus on next-gen technologies, unfortunately, AVC-X37000H models manufactured before May 2021 contain a faulty HDMI 2.1 chip that prevents support of 4K gaming at 120Hz via the Xbox Series X. This issue affected all of Denon and Marantz's 2020 AVRs butDenon models with serial numbers that end with 70001 onwards should be bug-free, as they boast an upgraded HDMI 2.1 chip. And should you be in possession of an older model then you can get hold of Sound United's external HDMI adaptor.The X3700H is one of the latest AV receivers from Denon. It’s a 7.2-channel receiver with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and it’s also 4K HDR compatible. In terms of power output, the X3700H is rated at 105 watts per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz – 20 kHz, 0.08% THD). Speaking of apps, the AVR-X3700H is also controllable by the Denon 2016 AVR Remote app for smartphones. I found the HEOS app much more user-friendly though. The 2016 AVR Remote app was unreliable and buggy in my experience. When it did work, the functionality was limited. Most of the time if I’m out of the IR range of the AVR, the HEOS app worked fine. If I’m within IR range of the AVR, the remote works fine. There are few competitors at this price that can decode Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced – not to mention offer nine channels of built-in amplification, and the ability to process up to 11.2 channels with the addition of a two-channel power amp. As the baby of the 2020 Denon X-Series, the AVR-X2700H has a slightly lighter version of the Audyssey speaker calibration technology than its bigger brothers. Nonetheless, the MultEQ XT measurements need only a few small tweaks to the levels before we’re happy with the set-up. You can also switch between two sets of Audyssey measurements if you can’t quite make up your mind. And that is just about all. The i/p scaler function controls the rest of the available functions. So, if you turn it off, you have the next closest mode to HDMI bypass, as all other processing (including resolution scaling, and progressive/interlaced processing) will be disabled. This is the mode I ended up choosing for the Denon AVR-X3700H. In many ways, it all stems from that upturn in power. It isn’t so much the fact that this is an altogether more powerful amplifier than the Award-winning AVR-X3500H – already a mighty receiver in its own right – but its muscle feels leaner and punches tend to sting more.
