About this deal

b. The RAID implementation is the same from enclosure to enclosure. Therefore, a drive created in one MyBook Duo enclosure CAN be installed into another MyBook Duo enclosure and READ SUCCESSFULLY. (As I have two MyBook Duo’s, I have physically tested this.) Connection speeds for both read and write are good and more than fast enough for you to edit 1080p video directly from the drive. There is also the option which is set-up through the software to enable encryption. This is 256-bit AES hardware encryption.

If the network drive's name has been changed, please attempt to use the drive's name instead of mybookliveduo. For example, use http://drivename/ on a PC, or http://drivename.local/ on a Mac. Having this much capacity sounds like a dream, especially for those using a 4TB external drive or a smaller Duo model. But the dream of having this much space is also, oddly, something of a nightmare. It’s tempting that based purely on appearances, the 44TB Duo is identical to the old 12TB model, although other than the drives, we did notice one significant difference. My Book Duo connects to your PC or Mac via USB Type C and supports USB 3.1. It includes USB Type C to Type C, and a USB Type C to Type A cables. The drive also has two USB 3.0 pass-through ports for accessories or other drives. WD My Book Duo has two pass through USB 3 ports Striping is the default configuration. If you’d prefer a mirroring, it would be best to configure that using the provided software tools before loading any data – because any changes to the drive layout will delete all the data on there during the configuration process. I tested the speed of RAID-1 on My Book Duo and found that it was almost half as slow when reading sequential data, although the write speed was about the same. The increase in speed appeared to be from random read. My Book Duo RAID-1 speed As I’ve already said, it also means I’ll have 6TB of capacity rather than the maximum of 12TB that I could have had if this drive had been configured as RAID 0. RAID 1 also offers slower transfer speed than when compared with RAID 0, so this test will show the results from a real-world test of the drive being used as storage solution for photographers and videographers.

RAID 1 mirrors the content from each drive. This means that when you copy a file onto the drive, it will be duplicated across to the other drive. Although there are two 6TB drives giving a total capacity of 12TB, by using RAID 1 I’ll only have access to 6TB of total storage.

WHAT IS RAID AND HOW DO YOU USE IT?

As well as the core features of the drive through the WD Discoveries App, you have access to further applications, some of which need to be paid for. The new My Book Duo has diverged in one major way from the previous designs; the rather lame ‘Book’ analogy has finally been terminated. External hard drives have come along way in a short time, and while the drives themselves have changed little, the technology and software around them have advanced at speed. When you pry the top of the My Book Duo, you can see that it uses standard 3.5-inch hard drives that you can easily replace. It includes two WD Red hard drive, which are used for NAS drives. In the future, if I need more storage, I can just replace the hard drives instead of buying an entire external hard drive. It’s more economical and better for the environment. UPDATE: According to Western Digital, the compatible drives are WD Green and WD Red. They do not say that it is compatible with other drives. In use, transfer speeds are pretty decent, by no means SSD speeds but perfectly suitable for the intended use and of course with the benefit of the huge capacity.

Once the cable is connected and the drive is positioned, it can then be connected to your computer. It takes a few moments to mount, slightly longer than a single drive but still fast enough. A small plastic tool is included for you to pop the top of the unit off and access the drives inside for replacement. The drives are mounted on tool-less trays that slide out easily. The quoted transfer speed for the bare mechanisms is 210 MB/s, and in JBOD mode that’s almost exactly what you get. Storage here is the main concern and with the 12TB configured in RAID 1, you’re left with 6TB capacity. RAID 0, or stripe, maximises the storage so will utilise both drives and give you a single storage drive with a 12TB capacity. Striping the drive will also give you the fastest read and write times.

Features

Use the setup software, if it has not been attempted already. The software can be found in the Online Learning Center. As a comparison, the My Passport SSD connected through USB-C reaches speeds of 188MB/s Write and 389MB/s Read. a. The proprietary nature of the hardware RAID implementation means that the individual disk drives CANNOT be read outside of the MyBook Duo enclosure. I believe this is not unique to the MyBook Duo as many other RAID enclosures have the same characteristics. c. If the MyBook Duo enclosure fails for any reason, a replacement enclosure will read the disks successfully. The data IS NOT LOST.” Although it optimises the drive, it’s not a great solution for secure storage as I need something that is as robust as possible.
