About this deal

He would make friends, both humans and animals, and a few enemies as well. We would also get to know about the incredible life Allan had led. The chapters would alternate between his past and the present adventures. The joke throughout is that Allan is an oddball. Right from his childhood up to his 100th birthday, he is unwilling to compromise, however difficult the situation. Allan refuses to let controlling people determine who he will be, and where he will reside. Instead, he bides his time when confronted with forces of oppression and eventually works out a way around them. Sometimes, he acts spontaneously, taking a drastic step as he did when climbing out of the window, but always ridiculously falling on his feet. I had very high hopes of this book, and actually nominated it for Goodreads’ group reads. After all, the title is irresistible, especially for those of us who have begun to feel our mortality. Power to the oldies! Resist any attempt to make oldies fit a mould! Who are some of your favorite writers? Can you include one or two NON-thriller/mystery writers among them? The book follows Allan through his past and present adventures and makes the reader feel kind of bad that they haven't had a coffee with at least ONE former communist leader (what kind of life have I been leading, anyway??) unlike Allan, who has sung, danced, drank, ate, AND had coffee - with a lot of them. I enjoyed Allan as a character who is extremely mild-mannered, with absolutely no interest in politics or religion, and thus ends up working and travelling to any number of political and religious places. The storyline and characters blend and flow very well, and while this wasn't a book I couldn't put down because I HAD to know what was going to happen, it did keep my interest and I enjoyed it.

If you can suspend your disbelief , then you might enjoy the story. Why did I say this? Because, Allan had not only been involved in some of the most important events of the twentieth century, but had rubbed shoulders with some of the most powerful people in the world such as Stalin, Mao, Truman and General Franco. The adventures are very difficult to digest but fun. The old man is around 60 years old, has a nice life with his two dogs, a daughter, and a past that won't go away. So, he's always paying close attention for signs that his past has found his present, and one day, it happens. He's planned for it, but it's been many years, and he was getting comfortable, but he still has the old instincts it seems. He goes on the run, and always manages to keep a step or two ahead of his pursuers. Unfortunately, his pursuers are part of the government, who have a lot of ammunition at their disposal, so it's hard to hide. The exception is Julian. We spend a fair amount of time in his head as he struggles to hold on to his integrity while making decisions that will alter the trajectory of his life. The 100-Year-Old Man..." was a hit when first published in Swedish and continued as a comedic smash when translated into English.

Enter the world of Allan Karlsson - the 100 year old explosives expert who, during his rather extraordinary century, has met some of the most influential of world leaders, stolen from a ferocious gang member whilst he was in the toilet, developed an affinity with Sonja (who doesn't often take to people - she's quite a discerning elephant) and is a very loyal and protective cat owner.

May 18, 2022 Update Trailer is up for the Hulu TV-series adaptation of The Old Man, starring Jeff Bridges and streaming as of June 16, 2022.

I won't even bother with a full synopsis, I'll just strike through what I though were really bad moments. The bad news", said Julius, and lowered his voice a little, "the bad news is that when we were well and truly pissed last night, we forgot to turn off the fan in the freezer-room." T homas Perry is the bestselling author of thirty novels, including the critically acclaimed Jane Whitefield series, The Butcher's Boy, which Paradeincluded in its 2021 list of 101 Best Mystery Books of All Time, and Metzer's Dogwhich This is another very good stand-alone novel from Thomas Perry, author of the Butcher's Boy and Jane Whitefield series. The protagonist, whom we meet as "Dan Chase," is a sixty-something retired guy, a widower with two dogs named Dave and Carol, who is otherwise alone and attempting to mind his own business, living under the radar in Vermont. Chase is a man with a past, though, who's been looking over his shoulder for more than thirty years, hoping that it won't catch up with him. But, of course, it finally does; otherwise there would be no novel. Once a man has stolen something he is a thief. If what he stole is big enough, then always and forever, no matter what else he’s done, he will always be a thief.Daniel has no choice but to hit the road, dodging several attempts on his life before he makes it to Chicago. With a new name, he rents a room from Zoe McDonald, an attractive divorcee trying to make ends meet. The other characters are also well drawn with plenty of revelations, motivations, & histories that are often only hinted at until they are slowly revealed. I was a bit disappointed by the data dump about one character, but the motivations suddenly made a lot more sense & supported an otherwise weak line. It also provided a knife-like twist. I enjoyed the audiobook re-read of The Old Man and the narration by Peter Berkrot was excellent in all voices. Oh, speaking of confrontations, there is a romance. , also, a real connection between consenting adults that is unusual in thrillers.
