About this deal

Robert Goddard is a natural storyteller and the tale unfolds easily with the added political and historical intrigue reinforcing the story. His characters are believable and his sense of humour lightens the fiction. The banter between his colleagues and Hidouchi is fun.

This Is the Night They Come for You Our review of : This Is the Night They Come for You

The story has Goddard's characteristic style of telling the story from two time periods with the forces that were involved in revenge and shameful cover-up all meeting in one final fatal finale. Algeria has a troubled history and Taleb who is nearing retirement finds himself unravelling history as he works with Agent Hidouchi to recapture a former agent.

This Is the Night They Come for You is a nail-biting thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Goddard’s masterful storytelling takes hold and never lets go, culminating in an electrifying finale.” My father wrote a memoir he called "J'avoue" during his last months alone in Algiers. In it he confessed to involvement in the murder in Paris of a presidential aide, Guy Tournier, while he and Harriet were working at Tativille in the spring of 1965.' However, what a storyteller. I felt myself involved in the troubles from the start and totally lost myself in the story. A story that takes place in Algeria, France and the Uk, that spans years and details Algerias independence from France, and all the bloodshed and corruption that came with that,

This is the Night They Come for You - Goodreads

This Is the Night They Come For You by Robert Goddard is released 24 March from @penguinrandomhouse @penguinukbooks.There is never a dull moment in a novel by Robert Goddard. His plots grab one in a vice-like grip and hold tight through the many twists and turns of each new revelation. Yet despite the brilliance of his plotting it is his intensely drawn characters that drive the mysteries forward. Most usually they are chameleons with more than a skeleton or two in their closets. At the heart of this novel is the struggle for an independent Algeria in the 50s and 60s. France cannot be proud of this time in history. Algeria had many activists in France especially in Paris and “terrorist” activities were frequent against de Gaulle and his government. de Gaulle became annoyed and frustrated and secretly activated a “committee” to punish the Algerian protesters. In particular, at one night of demonstrations police and other associates slaughtered hundreds of Algerian protesters – many ending up in the Seine. Attention to details- historical, places, atmospheres, is, as usual, to the nth degree. I've also enjoyed the gradual friendship between Taleb and Hisouchi, and they worked well together- they were definitely a force to be contend with. The difference between convicted criminals and unconvicted ones is that the unconvicted ones run the country.’ Really enjoyed my first Robert Goddard about the sad and horrific lead up to and hellish descent thereafter of Algerian Independence but won’t be putting into bookclub. Serious sag about halfway through in need of some assertive editing

My 2nd read from Roger Goddard is every bit as good as the first in this complex intriguing, intricate and stunningly well plotted literary thriller. All of the characters felt likeable (or unlikeable if you were meant to) and they all felt incredibly real. I enjoyed the blossoming relationship between the hardened Taleb and the newcomer Hidouchi: occasionally I didn’t enjoy their banter, but it was only ever occasional. Some of the secondary characters could even steal the show at times and their timely interventions were always welcome and never jarred the narrative.Mr Goddard combines fact and fiction in this thriller which left me wanting to know more about the history of Algiers both before and after independence from France. A terrific read. Inspired by real life events, with alternating timelines between past & present, This Is The Night They Come for You is filled with murder, espionage and political corruption. A pulse-pounding, breathless crime thriller, perfect for fans of Anthony Horowitz's Hawthorne series, Robert Galbraith's Cormoran Strike series and LJ Ross's Alexander Gregory thrillers. Note: My thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK, Transworld Publishers for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book for review purposes.
