The mic's are very nice also considering the price. I've had much worse for more money! Here you get two for the price of one! Both are condenser and capture the space at a remarkable depth, depending on the set input level. The H1n can capture audio up to 24-bit/96kHz sample rate, producing BWF-compliant WAV or MP3 formats. Capturing that audio is the same X/Y microphone configuration found in the H1n’s predecessor. This configuration is able to capture truly immersive stereo sound perfect for a range of applications including live performances, field recordings, interviews, podcasts and more.

Handling noise is also reduced, but you still need to be careful. In my tests, I mainly mounted the H1n on a Gorillapod, while the tests at the beach were on a Manbily monopod (reversed as a boom pole). But I held the device body in my hands for the final clip in the park, and you can hear some slight handling noise. Recording audio to an SD card on the H1n is straightforward. After you set the levels, all you need to do is press the Record button. The main recording screen allows you to change the audio format, enable the Lo-Cut and Limiter features, and engage Auto Level discussed above. When you’re not recording, you can access even more options by pressing the Stop (Option) button: I find the on/off switch weird - it is a slide that you have to hold for a second or two until the machine boots up/ powers down. Annoying, but about the only critiek I can think of.I did these tests in different conditions: speech indoors and outdoors using the built-in microphones and a couple of external microphones. I also tried using it for recording feet walking on pebbles, waves lapping on the beach, and ambient sound in the pier and in a park. One-touch button controls make it simple to record songs, audio-for-film, lectures, podcasting, and more. And its new monochromatic 1.25” LCD display is easy to read even in the brightest lighting conditions. When testing the X/Y microphones, we noticed that the audio would distort when speaking too close to the device. We also took the device outside when there was a moderate amount of wind, and our recordings were dominated by wind noise. I also use it for any song ideas I have, to record my singing, guitar or piano. The quality is good enough to put it into Studio One to start a new song. I pull the card out, put it into an adaptor and plug it into my laptop and transfer the audio. (Transfering audio directly from the machine is MUCH slower.) Doing any kind of decent mobile recording with good sound quality used to be a pain, either too much hardware was required or you needed an engineering degree. Now there are apps that can take on the heavy lifting, but something’s still missing, and memory capacity is an issue. Enter Zoom with their latest field recording unit, the H1n.

Sweetwater Sound, 5501 U.S. Hwy 30 W, Fort Wayne, IN 46818 Get Directions | Phone Hours | Store Hours The H1n’s USB port provides a digital output of the stereo mix and allows data to be send to and from your computer. It also allows the H1n to be used as a USB microphone and a microSD card reader. Proper directional boom microphones are expensive. So I’ve put my Rode VideoMic Pro on a boom, and connected it to a Zoom H1 clamped to the boom. Once again, you sync your video at the editing stage. To capture additional sounds Your Zoom doesn’t have to be connected to your camera. For interviews, or even for drama scenes, you can mount it on a mini-tripod closer to your presenter or actor, then sync the sound later. If you’re recording a complex scene, you could hide two or three Zooms in different positions to make sure you get all the sound you need. Instead of a wireless micAn3.5mm stereo mic/line input lets you record with your external microphones or other sound sources, and supplies plug-in power (2.5 volts). Connect headphones via the 3.5mm headphones output with dedicated volume control. You can also use the H1n’s built-in speaker to listen to your recordings. It replaces the Zoom H1. That was popular with ultra low budget filmmakers because it was small and extremely affordable, though it had some frustrating limitations. How does the new device compare? Why’s it useful? You can get slight hiss with some external microphones, depending on their output level. It’s excellent with the Rode VideoMic Pro (on +20dB output) though I was disappointed with the quality from the Boya BY-M1. Tests The 2 microphones on the Zoom are good enough, though the ux560 has better mics for recording for interviews. The only real downside is that there is a limit to using a 32 GB card at maximum, but considering the audio quality options, size, as well as on-board options like using the Zoom H1n as an external mic for a digital camera, it’s a truly practical tool at a great price point. Overall, it’s worth it to have a dedicated device to record rehearsal room recordings for your band, as well as pull double-duty to record high-quality audio for your YouTube videos. PROS:

It can be directly connected to a laptop or desktop computer and used as an external microphone. Battery Life: Carry extra batteries at all times I was hoping that a firmware update was available to allow for higher storage cards but, as of August 2020, there is still no support for them. The microphones are housed in a large plastic enclosure that resembles a basket, leaving the microphones exposed for unimpeded recording. It also has a 1/8-inch mic/input port, which means you can connect it to a lapel mic for interviews or a phantom powered shotgun microphone. There are a few different ways you can record with the Zoom H1n. Either directly to the SD card, or it can be used as a standard audio interface to record audio into a DAW. No matter which way, you’ll first want to set the levels. The microphones on the H1n are very sensitive and winds over 6mph will cause audio distortion and peaking if unprotected. Unfortunately, the Zoom does not come with any wind protection. The slim design is just big enough to house some simple controls that the user can work to easily navigate settings along the lit display. The two microphones are well shielded from any bumps with the molded-in guard, and a threaded mount to attach it to a microphone stand is thankfully built in. It’s powered by 2 AAA batteries, which should last about 10 hours during normal use. In this article, we will show you how to get up and running with the Zoom H1n. You’ll learn how to register the H1n, format the SD card, and how to record audio. Follow the sections below to get started.

Runs on only 2 standard AAA alkaline, Lithium, or NiMH rechargeable batteries, or AC adapter (AD-17) Now I'm using it via the usb cable to my computer as the mic for my Skype sessions, and any computer screen recordings I do. I bought the kit, so I have the mini stand which has extension legs (I hadn't realised) & makes it a great tabletop mic. However, there is a traditional menu in the H1n but to access it, you need to make that decision before powering-on the device. To access this menu, you have to press the “delete” button while sliding the power switch on.Services Guitar Workshop Electronic Repairs Workshop Music Store Events & Workshops Piano Showroom Music Lessons Recording Studio As previously mentioned, making adjustments to this filter is super simple. Simply press the “LOCUT” button to cycle through the different settings while in either standby or recording mode. Headphone Volume The mics are always powered and sending audio to the line out (headphone) port. Pressing the record button once will start recording. The small LED light will then go solid red.
