It seems at odds with these hard times that new cameras are released more frequently than ever, with people seemingly having enough cash to splash out on new camera kit. Peripheral Illumination Correction, first seen in the EOS 500D, is an in-camera solution designed to reduce the effect of light fall-off in the image corners. It works, though the difference is not night and day. At the top sensitivity setting of ISO 6400 the image is noticeably affected by noise, even when viewed at less than 100% The frame rate remains the same as before, with the 1100D offering 3fps in JPEG format, but the burst now lasts roughly 30% longer, giving up to 820 frames. Up to five raw files can be recorded at 2fps.And here are a couple of portrait shots. As you can see, neither the Flash On setting nor the Red-Eye Reduction option caused any amount of red-eye. Today the Canon EOS 1100D faces stiff competition, perhaps more so than when its predecessor was introduced in 2008. Not only are there great cameras available in the form of the Nikon D3100 and Pentax K-r, but also a plethora of other options now exist, including the compact system camera. I look forward to finding out what it is about the Canon EOS 1100D that may entice the punters away from its competition. It will be interesting to see if Canon’s new DSLR can handle the pressure. The available white balance settings are Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Flash and Custom; there is no way to enter a Kelvin value manually. You can fine-tune any of the presets using the White Balance Correction feature. The ISO speed can be changed by pressing the ISO button and turning the control wheel or using the arrow buttons on the navigation pad. You do not have to hold down the button while changing the setting. The ISO speed can be set from ISO 100 to ISO 6,400 in full-stop increments, and Auto ISO is also available. The chosen ISO speed is also displayed in the viewfinder. The great thing about buying into the Canon DSLR system with a camera like the 1100D is that it opens up a veritable treasure chest of lenses and accessories to choose from at a later date.
