About this deal

The difficulty does get a much-needed jumpstart by the halfway point once enemies start deploying more firepower, encouraging me to think more strategically about positioning and what abilities to upgrade. However, their mindless, easily exploitable AI doesn’t improve, and I even managed to trap a mini-boss in a corner, leaving it helpless as I put it out of its misery.

Overview

Also, I must object to the dismissal of RoboCop 2! It's a brilliant film and on the level of the first one, if not better in some ways. It’s an unfortunate turn of events that RoboCop: Rogue City won’t be on previous generation consoles, and this severely limits your freedom to play it if you don’t have a Series X or PS5. It seems incredibly unlikely that a previous generation version would be made at this point, so your best bet is to either get one of these consoles or buy it on Steam if your PC meets the system requirements. Rogue City's biggest problem, though, is that its "new" story isn't all that new. Thematically, the story covers much the same ground as the original film, targeting corporate ownership of public institutions, the sweeping aside of the poor for gentrified districts, the shunting aside of human workers in favour of automated machines, and how greed and destitution leads to increases in crime and violence. All of this is fine, but it also repeats a lot of the plot points from the first two films, like OCP seeking to replace RoboCop with a new model, and

Play as Robocop, and armed with your formidable Auto-9 and a selection of over 20 other lethal weapons, embark on an explosive first-person adventure to wipe out the criminal underworld.

It makes for a unique-feeling shooter - a game that can often feel very basic, tired, repetitive and old-hat, chiefly because it is all of these things - 100%. It's all very dated and has no real surprises up its sleeve; it's got weird uncanny valley NPCs, linear missions, a bunch of very run-of-the-mill guns and some of the worst grenades in the grenade business. If you don't care about RoboCop. If you are a fan though, there's something more here. There's immaculate recreations of some of the movie's most famous locations, lots of old characters make cameos, Peter Weller reprises his iconic role (enough to sell the most ardent fans) and the writing is absolutely on the money. The explosive-looking Robocop: Rogue City smashes onto Xbox platforms on 2nd November, and we were warned of the trouble that could potentially follow in a new trailer shown off at the Xbox Partner Preview event earlier today. RoboCop: Rogue City is a brand new first-person action game on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC that puts you in control of the cyborg as you patrol the streets of Old Detroit to solve crimes and serve the public trust.

The whole time I was playing RoboCop: Rogue City for this review, throwing motorcycles into street thugs or gunning them down using the iconic Auto 9 pistol, I couldn’t help but imagine how blown the minds of those who grew up with the original 1987 movie would be. Seeing this gritty, cyberpunk version of Detroit beautifully rendered using Unreal Engine 5 is a real treat, and well beyond the sort of game tech at the time would have been capable of. Such brilliant execution is only matched by how well developer Teyon has captured the sense of the character, never depicting RoboCop as someone who can run, jump or mantle, but rather as the hulking tank of a law enforcer he is. If you’ve never seen the RoboCop movies before and are a casual fan of first-person shooters, RoboCop: Rogue City is still a fun title that stands on its own merits and is worth your time if you can look past its minor flaws.Teyon blends bloody linear shootouts with light open world action for an entertaining, if unadventurous, RoboCop experience.
