F1 Custom throws big and stable soundstage, the width may exceed physical boundaries with some recordings. Neutral tonal balance: not warm but also not cool, sounds like the frequency response from top to bottom is quite linear (maybe anybody has measurement data to correct or confirm my hearing on this?) Just like nearly all the speakers out there, the Wharfedale diamond 9.1 speakers can be used in 2 different ways. You can use those speakers as a part of a bigger surrounded stereo system and combine it with a subwoofer, loudspeakers and a central speaker. The second option you have is to use the speakers as a basic equipment to accompany your office desk or living room alone. Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 Specs If you’re looking for great budget bookshelf speakers, then I highly recommend you take a look at the Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 speakers. I’ve already reviewed its little brother, the Wharfedale diamond 9.0, which has been on the market for a while as well. As might be expected from its small size, the Diamond 9.1 is of below-average voltage sensitivity, at an estimated 85.5dB(B)/2.83V/m. However, its impedance plot (fig.1), other than a dip to 3.9 ohms in the lower midrange and a combination of 5.7 ohms impedance and –36° capacitive phase angle at 120Hz, indicates that the speaker should be fairly easy to drive.

The build quality is great. Solid, curved cabinets, Kevlar woofer with rubber surround, good quality terminals with bi-wiring capability. Yes, it's a vinyl laminate, but it looks pretty good in Cherry. A refined, delicate, and detailed presentation of high-frequency articulation, with no trace of either hardness or softness and with a perfect replication of transients. A speaker may offer a flat on-axis response, but how that response changes to the speaker's sides also affects its perceived tonal balance. Here the little Wharfedale also performed well, with a wide, even lateral dispersion below 8kHz or so (fig.5). What appears to be a slight flare at the bottom of the tweeter's passband in this graph is actually the small notch at 4kHz in the on-axis response filling in to the speaker's sides. In the vertical plane (fig.6), the overlap in the crossover region between the two drive-units leads to a peak developing in the low treble more than 10° above the tweeter axis, and a corresponding notch more than 10° below that axis. Suitable stands should be used to place the Diamond 9.1s' tweeters at ear level. As I mentioned before, I recommend the Wharfedale diamond 9.1 speakers mainly for smaller rooms, if you’re not considering building a surround speaker system.

In terms of build quality, the speaker’s binding posts have a cast-metal housing. The front ports are also made of metal, which is considered as a big pro. Woofer of the Wharfedale diamond 9.1 has a metal frame as well, feeling very strong even though it’s very thin. If you hate to see a plastic material stuff on bookshelf speakers such as I do, then the Wharfedale diamond 9.1s won’t be a disappointment to you. The Wharfedale diamond 9.1 speakers weigh 12lbs. Sound Quality Wharfedale's Diamond 9.1 is a remarkable product for it's price in that it avoids the pitfalls that make most small budget loudspeakers unlistenable. The bass is quite surprising for a 5" woofer - solid and fast - without the "boomy" quality that is so common with entry level speakers. Highs are remarkably smooth. I once used a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 75th anniv. Edition with Rotel RCD02 cd player & Exposure 2010S integrated amp. Now it has been replaced by Tannoy Mercury F1 Custom. It is very much to the credit of this Wharfedale that it carefully avoids such a pitfall and manages to sound like a genuine 'grown up' hi-fi speaker, despite its very modest price.Their sonic balance also reflects the past with a big hearted and rich presentation that’s quite alien to most modern alternatives. But Wharfedale has been smart in not taking the retro theme too far, so the new Lintons are as detailed and dynamic as the best of their modern price rivals. The impedance plot indicates that the small woofer's reflex loading is tuned to 50Hz. However, as can be seen in fig.3, the expected notch in its response actually occurs a little lower in frequency, at 45Hz, with the twin ports covering a wide bandpass from 30Hz to 120Hz. (The outputs of the woofer and ports in this graph are scaled in the ratio of the square roots of their radiating areas.) The ports' higher-frequency rollout is free from the spikes that would indicate the presence of resonances, while the woofer crosses over to the tweeter at approximately 2kHz, with some overlap apparent. Both drivers mainly have relatively flat outputs within their respective passbands, with peaks balanced by dips.

Is it because the designer aimed to create a loudspeaker that would appeal to everyone? Initially this diamond appealed to me, that’s why I bought it in the first place. But after 2.5 months of quite intensive listening (6 days a week, 2 to 3 hours per day), I come to these opinion. As I mentioned before, the main difference between the 9.1s and 9.0s is the bass. The Wharfedale diamond 9.1 speakers offer huge amounts of top-end detail, which is reflecting in the final listening experience.

Hello, please please please tell the folks at Wharfedale to reissue the SFB/3 maybe like an anniversary special edition. I know it sold in singles for mono and today we want pairs. Open baffle, tube friendly and high efficiency please. Either as replica (cloth, drivers capacitors) or updated using today’s materials and drivers would also be ok if the sound and specs are there like an mk2. With a front port, these bass reflex speakers are punchier than you might expect and in no way could they ever be described as tinny. Over all, they may be small but the sound is grown-up, with excellent staging, realism and surprisingly powerful.
