Alex Honnold About Fear and Death An Interview With Climber Alex Honnold About Fear and Death

This one was interesting. On one hand, I am fascinated by Alex Honnold’s climbing abilities and mental fortitude in the face of the most daunting escapades. I’m also equally pleased to see the work he does in the clean energy field, especially when it comes to those to can’t afford it. On the other hand, every so often while reading, I came across a line that made me recoil and forget what I had been so impressed by. I was familiar with Alex Honnold's work before reading this book and I had seen Valley Uprising, Free Solo and The Dawn Wall as well as read some articles and seen some videos with Tommy and Alex. And I have to admit, since winning the Oscar, information about climbing and, especially, Alex, has been everywhere. I, myself, have a bit of a soft spot for Tommy, so I was very happy for the bits that he was featured in. David Roberts and Alex Honnold have done a wonderful job on the book, opening the climbing world a bit more to the general public. Synnott, Mark (October 3, 2018). How do you deal with fear, Alex?

The thing that I love about soloing is being in these incredible places and having these powerful experiences,” Honnold says. “In the VR film, the scenes are long enough so the viewer can look around a little bit and get a taste of what I love about those places.” Alone On The Wall". One of your colleagues has said you are such a fearless climber because you are not afraid of death. Is that true?

That quote from Mom is wildly overstated! [Laughs] The rest of my family says I was a total angel. [Laughs] But I remember an anecdote when I was a little kid. Mom had told me and my sister that we weren’t allowed to climb on the roof, but one day we went up there and then jumped off. We told Mom and she was like, Oh well, if you’re up on the roof, go ahead and clean the gutters. [Laughs] Ever since then I always clean the gutters when I’m at home. I’m actually cleaning the gutters as we speak. [Laughs] In 2016, he was subjected to functional magnetic resonance imaging scans that revealed that, unlike other high sensation seekers, [24] his amygdala barely activates when watching disturbing images.
