About this deal

Of course, Grey’s example also shows the limitations of Massie’s approach. After all, Grey’s secretive attempts at forging an Anglo-Franco alliance put Great Britain into a position of having to fight a war that she did not necessarily need to fight. More than that, Massie’s portrait of Grey as the grieving widower is a bit idealized, as testified by Grey’s affairs and illegitimate children. In some ways this book is a collection of biographies on those 'great' men of this age. The men who influenced the policy and strategy of the naval world from their perspective nations and positions that they held within them. Churchill on the political wrangling that accompanied the budgeting process for ship construction: "In the end a curious and characteristic solution was reached. The Admiralty had demanded six ships; the economists offered four; and we finally compromised on eight."

In 1906, Great Britain’s Royal Navy unveiled the HMS Dreadnought, a new breed of battleship with an all big-gun armament of ten 12-inch guns, giving her a broadside capable of hurtling 6,800 pounds of steel and high explosive at an enemy. Along with the guns, the HMS Dreadnought had steam turbines that could push her through the ocean at the not-insignificant speed of twenty-one knots. She was also heavily armored, especially at her most critical points. To manifest the psychic power, you must first pass a Psychic test. The opposing player can then select one of their PSYKER units that is within 24" of the PSYKER unit attempting to manifest the power and attempt to deny that power before its effects are resolved by passing a Deny the Witch test. If that sounds a little dry, it really isn’t. Despite this being a long and quite detailed account of a complex situation, Massie writes so well and clearly that I was completely hooked. I found this easy to read, endlessly absorbing and entertaining. Many of Massie's portraits are quite nice. For instance, I find Lord Grey remarkable and very sympathetic. He spent as much free time as he possibly could at his small country cottage with his wife, and waxed poetic about communing with nature while he fished the streams by his home. On Sundays, he would often spend the day reading with his wife: "He was a serious reader and quoted with approval the story of a man happy in his country home when unexpected visitors were announced. The man greeted his visitors, declared that he was delighted to see them, and then said, "And now what would you like to do? We are reading." An unlikely Prime Minister. What You Are in the Dark: Danny specifically calls this out as an old and tired cliché, but she gets a few moments like this, where nobody could pin a death on her and she has to make the hard choice.I found this book to be an excellent read while being quite exciting, very interesting and most certainly detailed to the point that I wish that I had taken notes ! The Nemesis itself almost certainly qualifies. While it's not sapient, it bends reality — the Lattice Danny makes use of — in a fashion which allows for what might be called 'unreality' to exist. And with a 3,000 year orbital cycle, that may have been responsible for the gods of antiquity. Classical Anti-Hero: Danny fits the bill for most of Dreadnought, being untrained and full of doubts; she's slowly starting to get better (which is to say, more self-assured) by the end. Distinction Without a Difference: In-universe, "superpowers" and "special abilities" are essentially the same thing, but the word "superpowers" is heavily coded for the superhero/supervillain lifestyle, whereas people with "special abilities" just lead normal lives. Sovereign (July 2017) meets Danny, now an established superhero, about 9 months later, facing a new threat.

a b Ceillie, Simkiss (February 24, 2018). "Ownvoices trans YA novel Dreadnought optioned for film". Culturess. After the launch of the HMS Dreadnought, however, a naval arms race ensued, with Germany suddenly desperate to match Great Britain, who had the greatest navy in the world. The result of this struggle for oceanic supremacy was the isolation of Germany, and the alliance of age-old enemies Great Britain and France. Where Does He Get All Those Wonderful Toys?: Sarah gets her equipment from an underground Technopath with money she takes from drug dealers. Later, she relies on Doc Impossible, who it's implied provides the artillery under the table. Later still, after he has one of his "eruptions", she is upset with herself for not letting her dad get killed.GPS Evidence: Calamity and Danny manage to figure out where one of Utopia's henchmen lives from a single napkin he used. Justified because they enroll the help of a literal wizard (Sarah's friend Charlie) to do it. Shooting Superman: While caping with Calamity, Danny gets shot by a liquor store robber, who empties a whole SMG magazine at her. Her only response is "Dude! Not cool!". Averted at the end: Danny has a Found Family, despite the weirdness. And asks Doc Impossible to adopt her. The authors have created a sort of anti-Book of Virtues in this encyclopedic compendium of the ways and means of power. Queer Colors: The cover art features a silhouette of the protagonist against a sunset with the pink, white and blue of the trans pride flag.
