About this deal

This book was so well written, I enjoyed the setting of the scene, it seemed beautifully idyllic and such a relaxing escape, until it isn’t. She has just married a widower with a young daughter, Riley, and is helping her mother, Nancy – who, in the first novel, was accused of murdering her first two children, released on a technicality and then under suspicion for murdering Mike and Missy until she rescued them – to move house. Jake’s vulnerability is amplified by the tentative and blossoming connections he has begun to make with Livia and her daughter. On one of his many rambles he hears a discordant sound of someone wailing but is uncertain of exactly what he hears. Starts as a mystery thriller then veers into cosy thriller, a sort of self discovery book and a romance novel.

When the bones of a young woman turn up during a treasure hunt, it is among these people that Jake will have to seek for answers. It transpires there is a very definite black hole lurking at the heart of this picture perfect place. The series is about a detective, Jake Jackson, who leaves an unnamed city, and goes and lives in Little Sky, in this beautiful desolate countryside with no internet or phone lines, and then gets drawn back into the world of crime.

The depiction of rural crime felt particularly dark against the glorious natural backdrop, and sinister in its ability to hide in the big spaces. S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Harry Vance slips out of his lover’s bed for a mysterious nighttime meeting. Former London police detective Jake Jackson's marriage has been snuffed out due to apathy and repeated failure to conceive.Jake leaves for a fresh start, but everything isn’t quite as beautiful as it seems following the annual treasure hunt and he winds up pulled into old boots to assist with solving the mystery of an uncovered death! This felt more dangerous under a big sky, protected by only the slimmest of boundaries, with no one around to help for miles and no phone. His marriage failing and his mental health struggling with being a police detective, a fortunate inheritance has allowed him to retire to an isolated house in the countryside.
