About this deal

The primary conflict between Alessandra and Kallias is a big part of what makes their story so interesting. The third and last of Tricia Levenseller’s attempts which make this book stand out to me is, undoubtedly, her desire to effectively set fire to the common trope of “antiheroes turning heroes” within YA fantasy. I loved the idea that she was just going to woo-and-kill the king and I couldn't wait to see what happens after she achieved her plan. The narrative touches upon the power dynamics between gods, saints, and their followers, creating political and personal intrigue layers. Honestly I was looking for a quick and easy romantic fantasy and that's exactly what I got, so I can't say I'm disappointed at all.

I own Daughter of the Pirate King but I haven’t read it yet, so I can’t speak to whether or not it’s got similar writing that could give you similar issues. Alessandra is very morally grey at heart, and I’ll admit it’s fun and refreshing to have her as a main “heroine”. One thing that I especially enjoyed is the reversal of expectations on the cunning, ambitious character. With Alessandra's help, both women are empowered to overcome these societal restraints, sending an important message to young female readers (and making Alessandra even more likeable in the process). This book also features funny side characters, a gripping mystery, and a strong, badass female lead. I mean, Alessandra wants to be this mastermind behind a kingdom’s council, but her ideas are so bloody common. It shows exactly what the book is about—a romance, with a fantasy element to have the dynamic depend on.

Orthodoxy, Cultural Tensions, Transformation Arcs, Power Dynamics, Secret Heritage, Magic Systems, Betrayals and Alliances, Inner Struggles, Mystical Prophecies. and that the friendships are a surprisingly fun and great addition to the story are not helping to me not being obsessed. I DNF Daughter of the Pirate King so I’m a little hesitant to go into another Tricia Levenseller book but this does sound pretty good. Alessandra talks about killing the first boy she loved because he decided he didn’t love her anymore.Though, of course, it's not quite as simple as that -- no great love story is, but especially when said love story involves a murderer and a king whom nearly everyone wishes to murder. Make sure to check out my playlist at the end of this review—it simply slayed me and my reading experience! yes, but also refreshingly friendly, charming, intelligent, and accepting heartthrob and haunted soft-boy!
