When looking for a truly great TV, sometimes simplicity is bliss - but can the best 32-inch TVs really compete?

The screen diagonal of 80 centimetres may be enough for you to use the model as a simple main device, especially since colour reproduction and Full HD sharpness fit the bill.giving an on/off Contrast Ratio of just over 1014:1, which is decent for this technology but not fulfilling for those that like to watch with the lights down.

If you’re after Disney Plus or Apple TV, you won’t get those apps unless you purchase a separate streaming stick. The Toshiba WK3C is an any-room TV that’s great for catch-up if cost is higher up your priority list than picture quality. It’s the same remote we’ve encountered on previous Toshiba TVs, which means a big and old-school looking wand with quick access buttons for Prime Video, Netflix and Freeview Play. This is partly because the production of small models has dropped in the wake of TVs 50 inches or larger. The L6353 is a sleek looking little TV with a very small, matte black bezel and a flash of silver at the bottom as an accent.SD content is decently handled too, but suffers from rougher-looking faces, less detail and fuzzier definition. Despite the presence of the Cinema Mode in the Picture Menu, the L6353 was unable to pick up on the PAL-centric 2:2 film cadence, so you’ll be best using ‘upscaling’ players and set-to-boxes to perform the task for standard definition film content sent through an interlaced signal. What we do like is that the Toshiba 43UL2063DB has gone for a natural looking presentation, eschewing the saturated colours of the Hisense A7500F. The Netflix app acknowledges this support, and an external Fire TV streamer similarly offered up HDR streams. Watching a football match and edge definition of the players is sharp enough: overall clarity and detail is fine, with skin tones healthy-looking and with a slight push to warm looking complexions.

It’s very large so some juggling is needed for one-handed operation but at least that gives room to accommodate generously sized buttons. We’ll look at the new Home page in the Features section but it’s very polished and easy to navigate. A shot of the sky showed some definition, while other shots had a grey tinge in the corners of the screen. If you’re looking for a 4K smart TV that has more powerful audio though, be sure to check out some similar models mentioned above. There’s also legacy phono AV and VGA inputs, plus a USB port and an optical digital audio output with headphone jack.
The menu pops up from the bottom, so you can continue to watch content as you move through the five tabs. The TV’s interface is decent, though I do wish Toshiba had included quick access buttons to Settings on the remote instead of directing users to press the Home button and scroll through the rows there. If you intend to put the UL20 on the wall, you can do so with a VESA wall-mount (available separately).

Black levels aren’t improved either with DV as the DLED backlight doesn’t allow for the punch or pop that sells HDR. This review relates to the 43-inch variant in the UL20 line-up, a size that makes it perfect for a second room or a bedroom. There’s also Alexa, built-in to the bezel of the TV, that can be used to navigate the TV or to ask questions and conjure up information, as you would with an Echo smart speaker. As it uses a standard LED backlight, it’s 78mm deep, but the gloss black bezel isn’t too large, and the central stand is easy to accommodate. While you can certainly hook up a games console, don’t think about using the WK3 as a gaming monitor.Watching Edge of Tomorrow on Blu-ray and black levels are fairly middling leaving the darker scenes towards the film’s finale looking murky. So that means you'll have Freeview channels, apps, and plenty of connections for HDMI and DVD players — all without breaking the bank. Instructions for assembly are clearer than they were on the U29, with the feet identified as left and right. The humble 32-inch television still has a place in bedrooms, kitchens and mancaves across the globe.
