Description

This book tells the story of a Puffin picture book that Ravilious was planning just before his untimely death in 1942. Good-humoured, unpretentious and a bit eccentric, it's more like having a well-read friend than a subscription to a literary review. Eric Ravilious went on to design for Wedgwood who, in 1937, brought out the George VI commemorative Coronation Mug, and in the same year the (much collected) Alphabet Mug and Nursery Ware designs.

His watercolours during this period document the setting up of coastal defences at, amongst other places, Newhaven in Sussex; he also worked on a series of lithographs which record life as a submariner patrolling the Channel waters.Often described as a particularly “English” artist, key to his style was an ability to convey in watercolor the nuances of the British climate. The third chapter looks at the pre-war watercolours of interiors, villages, landscapes, boating scenes, etc, some of which include his most famous images.
