While it may cause others to need to check a word here and there in a dictionary it really added to the atmosphere of the book.

Yet Keelin is a woman full of kindness and gentleness, with an urge to help others but secrets she must keep hidden away. She uses the redemptive power of language to lift the silence that is rape’s legacy and to promote an understanding of the stigma that haunts rape’s survivors. Everyone is hopeful that the documentary team will uncover new evidence and the murder case will be solved. I also blame the book for making me a bit snarky while I read it, as I just wanted to read and read and not be disturbed. You’re well aware there’s more to her than meets the eye, and it was great fun trying to guess her next moves.

Louise O'Neill's After the Silence is a devastatingly beautiful book full of secrets, mystery and a story so powerful and enthralling you cannot look away. It’s a topic extremely exposed to the dangers of being exaggerated, or misunderstood by a contemporary reader; but she succeeds in making this difficult dynamic a believable backdrop for the story. This, combined with her need to push her Oirish heritage, really grated on me- but we'll come back to that. A powerfully atmospheric, darkly compelling mystery characterised by Louise O'Neill's exquisite writing and powerful psychological insight. They’ve always protested their innocence in Nessa’s murder but there’s something horribly rotten about their superficial, outwardly perfect world. After almost a decade of being shunned by the locals and even having their hotel burnt down, Henry sees it as his chance to be heard.

Thank you to Netgalley, Louise O'Neill and Riverrun/Quercus for providing me with an e-copy in exchange for an honest review. He was allowed to have aged within the last ten years, but for her to have done so was a crime against humanity') to blaming the wife when a husband has an affair. After the Silence is a dark and intricate story of the lies we can live, and the fatal effects of long-held secrets. The characters and characterisation are brilliant - every character has their own place, and every one is fleshed out.

The flashback style is usually great for me, but there was no indication to the reader that it was a different time to the previous paragraph, or how much time had passed. I've read two of her books before this: Only Ever Yours in 2016, which I really liked; Almost Love last year, which I DNF'd. This book is full of intrigue and intensity, with a really great past and present storyline interspersed with interview dialogue between the documentary crew and the locals on the island.

But there’s so much more going on behind the scenes and I think Louse O’Neill portrayed that perfectly. She was vulnerable, and scared, but I also couldn’t figure out whether she was involved in what happened to Nessa, or at least knew what had happened to her. This book is set on a small island off West Cork, and features a decade old murder, a true life documentary about the case and tightly clung secrets. Despite the initial confusion, I did really enjoy that there was multiple time frames, as it gave us more of an insight in to the initial events that led to where the story is now, and each time it seemed to unearth more interesting secrets that were being covered up.
