Description

Wall plugs are needed whenever you want to mount items like shelving onto walls, a fastener like a screw alone will not be able to secure hold the item in place which could result it the item detaching from the wall, stripping the hole and the plasterboard with it. A wall plug fits into the pilot hole drilled into the wall and expands when the screw is inserted into it flaring out and gripping securely without damaging your walls. This is called being VESA compliant (more later) but as there are many different types we have not shown this in full here as it may confuse. Televisions are by no means cheap, so it’s always a good idea to put careful consideration into mounting your TV correctly and safely. If you don’t feel confident doing this yourself, always speak to a professional rather than doing a poor quality job. After all, the safety of your pets and family is at risk if your TV falls down.

Toggle plugs - These are used to mount items to hollow walling. Once pushed through the wings in the plug expand anchoring the plug in place. They are not recommended for mounting any items of weight. Position your anchor where you would like to install your TV and use a pencil to indicate exactly how you want it to sit.Thread bolts (with washers) through fixing holes and finger tighten into plugs in wall. If you get two bolts in finger tight this will usually be enough to free up your hands. Drill bit(s). These need to be correct size for the fixings you're using. Most fixings either use 8mm or 10mm drill bits. Drill the fixing holes. I recommend wrapping apiece of insulating tape or something similar around your drill bit so that you drill to the correct depth. Go ever so slightly deeper to be on the safe side.

Place the coach bolt alongside your drill bit then wrap some insulating tape around the drill bit so you can repeat the same depth of hole every time.

FAQs

You may find that the wall is just made of a wood or something similar like chipboard, MDF, Plywood or chipboard. This is not very common in house, but you may encounter it in outbuilding, converted sheds etc. These can be easy to mount to as you often just screw straight into the surface, but for the insertion of larger bolts a pilot hole may need to be drilled. Gripit Fixings – These were on the Dragons Den TV programme in the UK and was one of the biggest success stories from the programme. I use these for very large and heavy TV’s as they are a very strong and durable fixing. I recommend getting the blue ones which require a 25mm pilot hole to be drilled. The plug part is then inserted and with a screwdriver two rings can then be rotated which sit behind the plasterboard – the bolt can then be inserted and tightened which forces the wings to squeeze the wall behind the plasterboard. PLEASE DO NOT CALL OUR TELEPHONE LINES WITH YOUR QUESTIONS –We get so many calls with people wanting free technical support/ advice and it is making the day to day running of our business very difficult. Please only call us if you are a looking to book in your own TV wall mounting installation or quote in Sussex/ Kent in the South East of the UK only, we do not cover any other areas. Generally, a plasterboard wall will hold a TV securely and safely, but this is only as long as you use the right mounting. You should consider using an anchor or mounting plate for best results. How to mount a TV on the wall without a stud finder

How are the cables going to be managed? Are you going to feed them behind the plasterboard, bury them in the wall, install a surface mounted trunking or just leave them loose? Larger televisions are usually also heavier so will put more pressure on your wall. As such there’s a few important considerations you’ll need to bear in mind. It all comes down to the size and type of mount you use. The larger your TV, the bigger and more secure the mount will need to be. How much weight can I hang on a plaster wall? Wall anchors – Get some heavy-duty ones. Not that I would want to try up to this, but these can usually support up to 25kg each, with a few of these they can easily support a TV. To install these I small pilot hole is drilled in the plasterboard in which the plug part is inserted. The screw then goes in and with a brolly gun, the anchor can then be pulled which forces the anchor to swell up behind the wall. Now we know a little more about different types of mounting and how this differs depending on the size and weight of your TV. But, if your television is particularly heavy, you may find it useful to know that generally, with the right mounting, plasterboard can hold up to 50kg. Hiring a professional to wall mount your TV Plasterboard walls are constructed from a series of wood uprights with plasterboard sheets in-between. The wood studs will be strong enough to support the weight of your TV, but the sheets of plasterboard will not without special fixings.

Hang Your TV on the Wall Bracket

This guide will look at how to wall mount a TV on a plaster wall without studs, the maximum TV weight for wall mounting and what to do if you have no stud finder. How to mount a tv on a plaster wall without studs Gripit Fixings – Again, these have a used for dry-lined walls owing the shallow dept of the plug, which allows it to be inserted and fit in between the plasterboard and the solid wall behind. This would not be possible with conventional wall anchors which usually will not fit in the space. Mounting TV's above fireplaces does look nice and seems a natural position, but often this is too high. You may want to consider finding an alternate position. The size of the plug - This should match the sizer of the drill bit used to drill the pilot hole. Too small and the plug will not expand efficiently to remain anchored in the wall, too big and the plug will not fit flush to the wall which could affect the weightbearing capabilities. I always get asked, what height for my TV? The answer is quite simple, wherever you want it. But the “recommended” height is, when you’re sitting down in your viewing position that your eye level is between half way and one third of the TV height. I must say, personally I prefer this a little bit higher. Apart from the height, you will want to consider where about(right to left) that you want the TV on the wall. Usually you will want this centre of the wall, but you may want to centre it to your sofa or bed instead.
